Pere LaChaise cemetery is the largest cemetery in Paris. Named for the priest who was confessor to Louis IV, there are many famous people buried here.
The cemetery is a maze of winding cobblestone pathways lined with family mausoleums, some dating to the early 1800's.A family crypt, but no one you know.
Jim Morrison is here. The vault of Msr. et Mme. Lalique. And yes, the figure of Christ is Lalique!
The columbarium. Supposedly the ashes of Isadora Duncan and Maria Callas are here, but we searched and searched and couldn't find them. There are a lot of little marble plaques in this building!
The crematorium conveniently in the center of the columbarium.
Oscar Wilde's tomb with lipstick stains down through the ages.Yes, he did. And with lipstick on, too!
Edith Piaf's grave. France's earlier version of our own Judy Garland, "The Sparrow" as she was known is still much beloved by the French people, and her grave is still among the most frequently visited in Pere LaChaise. My take on Pere LaChaise: more marble, granite, and limestone in a single location than the Louvre.
